Swine flu (SIV)

Swine flu (SIV – Swine Influenza Virus) is caused by a virus and pigs of all ages can become affected.

Symptoms are related to the respiratory system and can display themselves as coughing, sneezing, high fever and secondary pneumonia. The virus is highly contagious. Decreased appetite and thereby weight loss is observed.

Mortality of piglets, abortions and returns are increased. The influenza virus will circulate in the herd, infecting new and unvaccinated animals once introduced to the flock.

Vaccination against SIV is an important tool in managing the disease, and AeroCollect® can help in monitoring the vaccination program.
