Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV-2)
Porcine Circovirus Type 2 (PCV-2) is associated with several disease complexes, including post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and enteritis.
PCV-2 affects the pigs’ immune system and symptoms vary between herds depending on the health status of the animals, with immunosuppressed animals being more susceptible. The disease is considered omnipresent and not all infected animals express symptoms of PCV-2.
Increased mortality, unthriftiness, respiratory- and gastrointestinal related symptoms are typically observed. Sows have a higher abortion rate, more returners, and fetuses appear mummified and/or deformed.
PCV-2 is important to manage because pigs are more susceptible to other diseases when virus is present in the flock. AeroCollect® is used as a tool for monitoring the flock for PCV-2, in this way making preventive measures possible and help in organizing a precise vaccination program for the flock.
